The gesture
A robot stands on a plinth, holding a smartphone. Every sixty seconds its articulated arm performs one clean swipe, and a clock advances by exactly one minute. What the screen makes instant and weightless, the machine makes physical: a deliberate, almost meditative act you can watch from across the room. Put your own phone down — the robot scrolls for you.
Six machines
The series spans how we actually use a screen — the functional, the beautiful and the intimate. Scrolling Through Time advances a minimalist clock, swipe by swipe. Scrolling Through Memory drifts through a personal photo archive. Color Cloud blooms with generative colour. Mirror from the Past turns the selfie camera on whoever stands before it, then scrolls back through moments just elapsed. Glitch fractures the image into flickering abstraction, and Scrolling Through Desire draws soft sounds of arousal from every touch.
25 years of Tjep.
Tjep. is the Amsterdam studio of Frank Tjepkema, whose work is held in fifteen museum collections including Centre Pompidou, the Stedelijk Museum and Cooper Hewitt. Infinite Scroll marks the studio's twenty-fifth year and is released as a limited edition of 25 — in brass, stainless or corten steel, one for each year of practice. Materials that outlast the screen.
