Reconsidering Kitsch
I try to alter preconceived ideas and answer questions surrounding (bad) taste.
Through my research I try to unlearn the structures and notions I was taught in my upbringing and previous (art history) studies. Combining references from pop culture, feminist literature, art history, my social media algorithm and camp movies and treating them equally important. In doing so I create works that challenge the viewer to rethink their own preconceived ideas surrounding notions of ‘the norm’ or ‘accepted expression’.
My research addresses these notions in two separate projects, first is a room divider that presents a tool to live a life outside of societal norms and an alternative canon/hall of fame. Second is a video work installation which is the result of a collaboration with Tom Desterke: The World According to Miss and Eloquentia.
I approach kitsch and camp as a form of resistance and as a tool to question gender norms and gender performance. My work is an ode to colour and celebrates queer culture and feminist critique. Most of all, it invites you to take up space.
