Square by square
By collecting discarded fuse beads, Lavender invites us to look differently at forgotten materials and discover the creative possibilities they hold. The beads were sorted by hand into shades of purple, pink, white and transparent before being fused into 7 × 7 cm square modules. Each square was drilled by hand and connected using handmade twisted metal rings.
An unfolding form
Rather than working from a predetermined design or fixed pattern, I allowed the sculpture to develop as I went, watching it grow one square at a time. Each new module responded to the shape and possibilities of the ones before it, allowing the material itself to influence the final form. A material often associated with children’s crafts became a life-sized armour, created entirely from what already existed and shaped by the limitations of the material.
