Designed for everyday interiors, the NANO Stool can work as a compact seat, side table, or occasional piece. The project grew from childhood memories and an interest in combining materials that are rarely seen together.

A Different Kind of Stool

The project is rooted in childhood memories of my grandparents’ modernist house by Lake Balaton and a traditional three-legged milking stool from their Hungarian folk art collection. Inspired by the striking contrast between vernacular craft and modernist architecture, I developed my own contemporary interpretation of the three-legged stool.

From the first prototype emerged a second version: a more solid, heavier four legged stool that can also function as a side table. The thickened legs give the piece a sense of stability and stillness, while its proportions evoke the presence of a brutalist sculpture.

My stool is an object of today. It is made entirely from recycled and recyclable materials. The seat is crafted from wood, whose lathed form allows for a perfectly curved, comfortable surface. The legs are made of Karlite: a waterproof and colourful, unexpected material choice that gives the piece its distinctive character.

Both the hardwoods used - oak and walnut - and Karlite are long-lasting, sturdy, and solid materials. Responding to user needs, the stools are designed in two different sizes, ensuring comfortable use across all ages.

About Studio Sarolta Huttl

I'm a Budapest and Los Angeles based interior designer and furniture maker guided by function, light, and colour. Working primarily with natural materials and refined detailing, I create warm spaces and durable objects that support everyday life. The NANO Stool, my first furniture collection, features two prototypes highlighting contrasting materials: seats in oiled oak and walnut paired with legs made from Karlite in different colours.
