50 new directions
Since early 2026, Teun Zwets has been working from his new studio at Hallenweg 11A in Eindhoven. For Dutch Design Week, he fills his wood and metal workshop with 50 new chairs. Fifty completely different designs, which he sees as 50 new collections.
After two years spent largely building his existing collection, Teun wanted to find out what else could emerge. So instead of designing one new collection, he decided to start 50 at once. Each chair is a chance to try something different: a new material, an unusual construction, another form or a technique he has never used before.
The work happens fast and intuitively. An idea does not need to be fully figured out before he starts building it. It is through making that Teun discovers whether there is something in it. The result is a huge range of possible directions. Some will remain a single chair, others he might want to develop tomorrow. And somewhere among the 50 might be the collection he will work on for years to come.
Different Worlds
On the first floor, the showroom is transformed into a series of different worlds, bringing together new work, existing collections, art and installations. New pieces from the Splitted collection are presented, including a corner sofa and an oval table.
For one of these worlds, Teun collaborates with artist Merijn Kavelaars, known for paintings and installations filled with bold lines, vibrant colours and organic shapes. His work often moves beyond the canvas to take over entire spaces.
For DDW, Merijn uses part of the showroom as his canvas. A painting is framed in a Splitted frame made by Teun, while a chair and sideboard become part of the same installation. Their work connects through an intuitive approach, allowing material, form and chance to shape the outcome.
Elsewhere, another part of the showroom is built entirely from cardboard, creating yet another world. Rather than a traditional furniture display, the showroom becomes a place where you step from one world into the next.
