This PhD research investigates how microbial scents can preserve and reimagine climate-threatened olfactory heritage, archiving odours at risk of disappearing through living microbial cultures. Drawing on biological processes such as fermentation, the research uses Rome as a case study to propose new methods for documenting and evoking olfactory heritage through living microbial scents, creating an archive of smellscapes for future generations

Microbial Petrichor Scent
Gabriella Codastefano
Scent memories are deeply tied to specific moments, environments, and ecosystems, shaping a community's identity. While we know climate change is reshaping our sensory landscapes, its impact on our olfactory heritage remains largely unexplored.
