A storytelling space to re-imagine women’s health, highlighting stories about Pelvic Organ Prolapse
One Size Fits None is a storytelling & design research project about dissolving the taboo around a medical condition called pelvic organ prolapse (POP). The shame surrounding POP has meant many people aren’t able to share their experiences and design innovation is seriously lacking. Annually, nearly 60,000 women in the Netherlands are referred to a gynaecologist for POP – and about 140 million people worldwide are living with the condition. Having POP means that the person’s internal organs – like the bladder, intestines or uterus – descend out of the pelvic cavity and often (not always) this means they have to wear an uncomfortable “one-size-fits-all” silicone pessary internally to support those organs to stay in the body. Yet, this pessary has lacked new ideas from the design world for decades. In consultation with Dutch gynaecologists - Dr Kim Notten & Dr Mirjam Weemhoff - studio affect lab has created an interactive storytelling space to spark conversation about POP and foster design inspiration in women & gender queer health. POP is a project that forms part of the Bloody Beautiful movement started by affect lab using art & design to close the gender health gap.
