Lowering the barrier to speak Dutch
Learners are often afraid of making mistakes and this, coupled with the high level of English among Dutch residents, often results in the tendency for people to speak in English. Holland Expat Center South (HECS) has a range of initiatives, information, and tips to encourage the use of Dutch. They have collaborated with design studio Spiekkleding to develop a range of cheat-sheet items which remind learners of key phrases. Their umbrellas, board games, scarves, and bags help lower the barrier to speaking Dutch.
