Light as a way to read space
Light is more than illumination; it shapes how we perceive and experience our surroundings. It reveals texture, colour, proportion and material, allowing us to read a space not only visually, but intuitively. The quality of light can influence how focused, comfortable or at ease we feel within an environment.
At studio Thier & van Daalen, this relationship between light, material and space is the starting point for every design. We explore how light can reveal what is already present, while adding something new to the experience of a place. Rather than treating lighting as a separate object, we see it as part of the space, something that can define atmosphere, strengthen architecture and contribute to how people use and feel within it.
Reading a space through light means looking beyond the fixture itself: understanding what a space needs, what is missing and what could be enhanced. From a single collection piece to a bespoke lighting solution, we design in response to the specific character and use of a place.
