Heirlooming in Strijp-S Public Space
Studio Karavan x Heirlooming is a mobile textile crafts studio that creates functional textile objects from discarded home textiles, garments and tools. The project concerns textile circularity with a sense of cultural transmission of needlework crafts and vernacular knowledge, proposing to bring to light the invisibilities of who and how our clothes were and are made.
The project is presented for the first time in partnership with DEMO Eindhoven, a playground for testing ideas and community building, making it its base location (Plug-in City) to empower general audiences in cultural literacy and rethinking economic systems and spaces linked to creative labour.
The launch of a multi-use mobile textile studio in an Italian 1974 Piaggio Ape, previously belonging to a bakery, makes the case specifically for the valuation and platforming of female craft labour – historically performed in domesticity – and textiles as the fabric of humanity: a living universal pedagogical tool.
The project also anchors near the fashion and textile platform New Order of Fashion (NOoF) when showcasing radical and regenerative perspectives on wool fibre.
Gathering Craftswomanship
Studio Karavan x Heirlooming presents the practices of Teresa Carvalheira, Sam Bennett, Chiron Floris, Julina Vanille Bezold, Sophie Nadel, Ekaterina Ravina, Ghenva Alkabra and Juha Vehmaanperä, offering a daily program with different textile techniques and tools
on display. The program focuses on craftswomanship: the so-called minor arts – decorative or applied arts – linked to female labour, domestic needlework, and textile hobby culture. This is an opportunity to bring these to the public sphere and test audiences, space versatility and pedagogical tools.
