The Fermentor

Fermentors are the “working horses” for biotechnologists. They mimic the real factory conditions, which are applied at large industrial scale.

At the heart of The Biodesign Warehouse is fermentation specialist Nick van Biezen’s fermentor. With 30 years of experience, Nick explores how fermentation can grow materials and colours. Living systems require time, care and monitoring, transforming how we design, cultivate and manufacture.

Various projects/topics performed by Bio-aNAlytiX van Biezen

At the beginning of the 2021 he started fulltime with Bio-aNAlytiX van Biezen to perform contract research for various companies. His heart makes a “slight jump” when working with filamentous and basidiomycetous fungi. Bio-aNAlytiX van Biezen has his own small lab at BlueCity with multiple fermentor systems ranging from 2 litre till 20 litre scale. As an independent researcher he performs consultancy work, which is also validated by own experiments. Together with other companies, Nick collaborates on various topics where his microbial expertise plays an important role in various projects e.g.;
- production of bacterial and fungal colours for textile dyeing
- production of fungal coatings
- fungal degradation of textile instead of composting
- small and large scale fermentation systems set-up for mushroom producers
- studying the effect of mycelium on seaweed
- production of fungal based meat replacers
- workshops on tempeh production
- collecting mushroom mycelia from nature (over 200 specimens)
- upcycling of Tenebrio frass as a natural NPK-fertiliser
- development of a myco-herbicide against Japanese knot weed
- various advisory consultancy tasks on location
