Time traveling city planners!
Would you rather help build a mighty medieval trading city? Or will you help design future water cities? Jump into our architectural time machine and choose where you want to step out. Like an architect, you will get to work creating a scale model of your own design. In doing so, you choose a size, proportions, and building components that suit the function of your building and the era of the city you are helping to build. In this way, together with all participants, we will build cities from different eras throughout the week. What can we learn from cities of the past? And what does your ideal future city look like? We are very curious!
Spontaneous city | educational program
The ongoing workshop we are offering during this year’s DDW is based on the Spontane Stad (Spontaneous City) educational program. This program comprises an educational kit with carefully developed materials that allow children aged 8 to 11 to collaboratively develop a city within the classroom. As a group, they are responsible for urban planning decisions and together they select the functions to be included in their city. The children construct the chosen buildings at a 1:50 scale. During this making process, they consider the size, proportions, and visible architectural features appropriate for each building's function.
Spontane Stad teaches children collaborative design, how to visualize design concepts, how to continuously further develop ideas, about handling criticism, to have the courage to ask critical questions and also increases their engagement with the world around them.

Re-usable Boxes
To build the spontaneous city, we use repurposed cardboard boxes, think of empty tea boxes or cartons of chocolate sprinkles. These boxes provide the children with a 3D volume to kickstart their design process, as well as a practical reference for working to scale.
We have plenty of boxes at our studio ready for building, but if you happen to have a box of your own that you’d like to turn into an architectural masterpiece, please feel free to bring it along!
