(Archief) DDW Talks: Sustainable Products

Which materials and crafts will help us build a better future?

Dit project was onderdeel van DDW 2021
Britt Roelse

Design is partly to blame for an over-abundance of products in our lives, but it also offers the solution. Discover radical processes and materials that offer solutions to reducing waste and promote more meaningful object relationships.

Back to the drawing board.

One solution could be to go back to the drawing board and become craftsmen: focus on the core of making complex, radical, natural, sustainable, circular, meaningful, and aesthetic objects. Together with the Crafts Council Nederland, we will dive into the world of long forgotten, crafting techniques like basketry. What can this traditional technique do for the designs of the future?

On the other end, institutions play a major role in regulating, educating and supporting industries in the transition from a linear model of production & consumption to a circular one. The EU Commission’s programme The New European Bauhaus is an initiative centred on design and living spaces with the aim of making Europe climate neutral by 2050. President of The Bureau of European Design Association, Päivi Tahkokallio will talk about the programme and its impact.

Bringing a perspective in between craftsmanship and institutions, leading company in the flooring sector Tarkett will present their programmes focused on closing the loop on waste, explaining how the collection, repurposing and recycling of old flooring, can radically reduce the environmental impact and inspire other industries.

Speakers:
• Chris Kabel | designer-maker and enthusiastic participant of the Basketclub
• Rob Kragt | CSR Communication Manager, Tarkett
• Said Belhadj | entrepreneur and sustainable product developer, founder of Raphia: a sustainable shoe brand
• Päivi Tahkokallio | founder and CEO of Tahkokallio Design+, president of BEDA (The Bureau of European Design Associations), with BEDA the first partner of the New European Bauhaus initiative and chair of the jury of the Design Europa Awards, organized by EUIPO
