Cortaderia selloana repurposed: an invasive species reframed as a biomaterial that defines, filters, and contains.
Through the containment of Cortaderia selloana (Pampas grass), this work develops a biomaterial and constructive system that reframes an invasive species not as threat to be eliminated, but as a resource to be transformed through design. By following an ecologically conscious process through seed neutralisation and proper handling, the resulting material uses the inflorescence while still retaining the visual identity of the plant.
Beyond material experimentation, the project proposes a collection that frames C. selloana as a containment matrix for environmental elements, such as light, air, and space. In the ceiling lamp, the primary element of the collection, the material acts as the primary diffuser of light. With three identical modules that mimic Pampas grass' natural repetition, each is formed by a wire framework enveloped in sewn biomaterial sheets, that hang at varying heights from a shared ceiling canopy. The light source is concealed within the upper hub of each module, so that illumination reaches the exterior exclusively through the fibres and texture of the sheet.
