The Schoenenkwartier and lab
During Dutch Design Week 2025, the Schoenenkwartier (Shoe Quarter) will showcase the work of this year’s Artists in Residence. These young, (inter)national designers and makers were given three months to experiment, research, and develop new designs in the Shoe Lab. Their work demonstrates how innovation, craftsmanship, and sustainability reinforce one another in the world of footwear.
The Schoenenkwartier is both a shoe museum and an innovative shoe knowledge centre located in the heart of Waalwijk – the Dutch city of leather and shoes. In the Shoe Lab, tradition meets technology: from traditional shoemaking machines to 3D printers and vacuum-forming equipment. Here, creators work alongside professionals on prototypes, deliver workshops for students, and explore new ideas.
Artists in Residence Programme
The Artist in Residence Programme annually offers four promising talents accommodation, workspaces, and professional guidance to support their development. The outcomes of their residencies are presented at ‘Podium Shoe Lab’ and during Dutch Design Week.
