Research translated into textile, exploring how the shape of women's clothing gains meaning through people, time, and environment.

Marlot Eefting

My work emerges from images and associations, leading to new insights and connections. The associative process lies at the heart of my research and is translated into textile and thread. I explore the relationship between fashion, women, history and the meaning found in time, form, and context.

Artist statement

As a creator, I love to work with textiles. With needle and thread, I connect stories and fabric. A second, more abstract narrative often emerges on the back of the work, an additional layer that deepens my work.
I am fascinated by art history and feel a strong connection to the theme of women's emancipation. I seek depth, unravel stories, and translate them into images in my own unique way.
My strength lies in the detail, not in the size of the work. I leave the creative process largely to intuition. It is precisely in that spontaneous process that the most interesting combinations and translations of my ideas emerge.

My graduation project

In my graduation project, I explored the relationship between fashion, women, and history. My working and research methods were guided by what appealed to me in certain images. However, I always stayed within the framework of the relationship between fashion, women, and history to give my research a clear direction. After a journey through images, I arrived at the research question: is there a difference in shape between restrictive clothing and liberating clothing?

I answered my research question by incorporating my associations with existing images into textiles. In this way, I aim to connect the subjects of fashion, women, and history in my work, portraying them beyond the usual chronological order and facts. Hopefully, my interpretation will offer a new perspective, open to personal interpretation. In my experience, the goal is precisely to explore the variety and similarities in clothing over the years and to juxtapose these images with one another.
