Reflecting Wildness – Take Time to Watch the Bees

Wildness

'Reflecting Wildness' is a spatial installation of 5,000 handcrafted mirrored bees that transforms ecological data into a colourful and immersive landscape. What initially appears playful and enchanting gradually reveals a more urgent reality: more than half of the wild bee species in the Netherlands are on the Red List. The 5,000 bees represent all pollinators and the fragile biodiversity that surrounds us, reminding us of the countless relationships that make life possible. The installation invites visitors to slow down, look closer and discover the wildness that exists all around us — often unnoticed.

Reflection

The mirrored surfaces create more than visual attraction. As visitors move among thousands of bees, they see themselves reflected within the swarm and become part of the landscape they are observing. This creates a moment of connection and raises questions about our own place within nature. Rather than presenting statistics as distant facts, 'Reflecting Wildness' turns them into a physical and emotional experience. It encourages visitors to wonder, reflect and become more aware of the ecosystems they are part of. The work does not seek to lecture or provide simple answers, but to open a space for curiosity and conversation.

Circularity

Every bee is handcrafted from leftover mirrored material, giving discarded resources a new life. For studio mo man tai, circularity is not simply a technical solution but an essential part of the story. Material that might otherwise be considered waste becomes the carrier of a new narrative about biodiversity, connection and care. The installation demonstrates how visual attraction and meaning can emerge from what is already available. By combining reuse, visual storytelling and social engagement, 'Reflecting Wildness' connects ecological awareness with a tangible example of circular design. Wild creatures don't need us to control them. They need us to care.
