Mimica Touch is a patented label or bottle cap that turns bumpy when food or drinks spoil, based on actual temperature conditions. It provides an accurate, real-time indication of the product’s freshness with a tactile interface.

Mimica is an award-winning design-led UK company with a mission to radically reduce unnecessary food waste caused by overcautious expiry dates (SDG 12.3). We take a multidisciplinary approach and bring together food scientists, designers & engineers to work side by side.

Globally, a third of food produced is wasted (FAO, 2015), with 60 percent of it still safe for consumption. If food waste were a country it would be the third-largest contributor to climate change, behind the USA and China. A major issue is overcautious expiry dates that lead to edible food being thrown away.

Mimica started as founder Solveiga’s final university project while studying industrial design, where she took an inclusive design approach. The tactile system is therefore accessible to all, including those with visual or cognitive impairments.

The concept has won multiple awards including the James Dyson Award, Mayor of London’s Entrepreneur Prize and MIT Technology Review’s ‘Inventor of the Year’.
