Messmerizing

Stil no. 2 — © Amy van der Horst

The artworks Symbiosis and Silent are based on nature that has adapted to the man-made structures in the city. How nature flourishes on the walls, in the alleys and on the pavements without us even noticing it. An ode to fungi, lichens and fossils. These artworks are part of MESSMERIZING.

Symbiosis

A perfect example of this is a lichen, which you can find all over the city. An organism which consists of an alga and a fungus living in symbiosis that uses stone, buildings and bridges as its perfectly fertile breeding ground. These small, beautiful decorations show that nature is stronger than we think and can be found in everything around us.
Another example are the honeycomb fossils that you can find in curbs but also in the floors of many old buildings. A small and subtle gesture by organisms that lived thousands of years ago. A sign of the great forces of nature, the patterns and movements that simply continue to exist even if man would go extinct.
