MESSMERIZING

Messmerizing - Atelier Schaft

A new collection of Giant hogweed objects, sugary crystals & left-over materials of the NS.

The Gianthogweed, sugar & train left-overs

The new collection consists of three different main materials that interact with each other.

The Giant hogweed is a non-native plant and is perceived as an invasive alien species. I want to re-value this giant weed by showing the positive material side of this plant species.

Plants thrive because of the process of photosynthesis, glucose (sugar) is in this process crucial. At the same time, it is a controversial substance that surrounds modern society.

Infrastructure such as train tracks is a tool for invasive plant species like the Giant hogweed to spread along. I use the re-use of old train elements as a metaphor for this natural versus unnatural marriage.

About Erik van Schaften

Atelier Schaft is fascinated by the fact that every material has its own story. We are living in a material world, yet many material stories are untold. Currently, Schaft works with unusual (waste) materials and processes such as invasive plant species & sugar crystallization.
