LARS HERZOG chose for his diploma project at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences to design a running and cycling bike for children that expands the concept of design by exploring the experience of learning and gaining independence in ways that promote sustainable mobility.

The design process for PELLE began with the idea of providing children an easy and playful introduction to cycling, while communicating the importance of a child's self-efficacy. As a dynamic children's bike that can be converted into a balance bike, PELLE is as useful as it is durable in accommodating a child's urge to move and eagerness to learn. The design and research process delivered a compact children's bike with clear geometric lines and an innovative, single-sided wheel suspension for easy-access repairs — ideal for parents and children alike when it comes to bike maintenance. By providing kids the opportunity to assemble on their own details such as flags, kickstands or water bottle holders, PELLE promotes the development of motor skills, coordination and balance, but also a child's independence.
When converting or repairing a PELLE bike, children learn about the principles of long-term and sustainable strategies in product use. Lars Herzog's innovative design concept is a manifestation of his combined experience and passions that, promotes the cultivation of individual and sustainable mobility at a young age.
