New Perspective

WHY

Since my sister has been in a wheelchair, she has experienced that people have started to treat her differently; oftentimes people quickly condemn her as pathetic, less or in need of help. People see the wheelchair as a weakness; as the definition that is something wrong with your body. People have prejudices about the wheelchair and its users, but don’t take the time to zoom in and forget that they are just as much people as anyone else. Wheelchair users see this differently, the wheelchair is a tool, an aid to achieve what you cannot do without the wheelchair, or for which you otherwise have no energy. My sister showed me this perspective, and my goal is to share this perspective through my artwork with the rest of the world . New Perspective is the narrative that allows a conversation about inclusivity and offer the viewer a new perspective towards wheelchair users.

WHAT

The artwork I made can be viewed from multiple perspectives, from the first perspective you see a wheelchair, and when you walk 90 degrees around the artwork you see a running woman. Despite the fact that these two perspectives seem so different from each other, I have incorporated them into one work of art, to show that this is the same person. My sister used to be in athletics just like me, only now she’s in a wheelchair; two different perspectives but still my sister is the same person.
