Bovenkamer conflict fights stigma and stereotyping. It celebrates the harmony that is present between touch, intimacy and vulnerability. This series gives acknowledgement and context to the divisions and questions I experienced in today's society, while growing up as a person with a queer identity.

The overarching theme within this project is to make peace with my misunderstanding and fear of masculinity. What is masculinity and why do I sometimes feel threatened by the concept alone? Can I define my own masculinity and keep rewriting and rediscovering this role as often as I want? The constantly imposed separation between simply fulfilling the 'masculine' or 'feminine' role within a gay relationship feels limiting and too definitive to me. It is difficult to break free from a label once it appears to have been assigned. I often feel trapped and cramped within one role. As if there is no room for the ever-changing flexibility of growth, development & vulnerability. Within this project I put this intolerance to the test. The stereotyping, subdivision and strict categorization within the gay community can be like a restriction on freedom of exploration, development and expression. I often feel the presence of this. So my question is; where does sexual preference end and toxic masculinity begin?
