The human squat is both simple and esthetic. Our shoulders move vertically in line with our feet. The hips, knees and ankles move freely within their limits and keep our body balanced throughout the whole cycle. This elegant movement is the basis for the design of our Sit Stand Desk.

The idea started in the hospital

Aernout Langeveld works as an orthopedic surgeon. The current examination table in the outpatient clinic is an old-fashioned monstrous lifting mechanism with a dull flat surface. This outdated design triggered us to develop a moving frame. In conjunction with Spark Design and the IPO (Haagse Hogeschool) we designed a moving frame consisting of a hip, knee, and ankle. Many iterations have been made by various student groups. Two design students have written their final thesis on this table. At its core this design is gracious and strong. The movement makes you curious, just like the human body.

Healthier work habits

An overview article by Edward Laskowski from the Mayo clinic states that sitting behind a desk all day is unhealthy. Medical conditions like increased bloodpressure, high blood sugar, high unhealthy cholesterol can diminish life expectancy and are strongly associated with long periods of sitting. More movement during the day is vital to keep people healthy and energetic. Brief periods of standing up when working behind the computer during the day is already a good start.

Future perspectives

LangeveldDesign will continue to create furniture that stimulates a healthier working lifestyle. The option to allow Bluetooth connecting apps that can monitor and guide your activity while working at the SquaTable will be added. Height adjustment will be automated when the user’s phone is in proximity. Their timeless design and build quality will keep them attractive for generations to come.
