Are we ovestimating the capabilities of AI or are we underestimating its potential impact? What exactly is quantum technology, and how can we begin to intuitively understand it? These are the questions answered by Emergence Delft—a curiosity-driven, interdisciplinary team of students.

indifference - Installation 1

An algorithm is simply a set of rules for problem-solving, found in both complex mathematics and daily routines like getting out of bed and making breakfast. Indifference explores algorithms that appear intelligent, like Google Maps or ChatGPT. These systems, though human-like, don’t truly experience the world as we do. Misunderstanding this can distort our relationship with reality. As AI shapes our worldview, distinguishing between artificial and human intelligence becomes crucial. Indifference uses Spatial Sound, developed in collaboration with 4DSOUND, to delve into these complexities. Omnidirectional speakers create a space where every spot offers a unique listening experience, unlike traditional setups. This technology allows sound to be positioned anywhere, enabling immersive experiences like hearing a bird fly around you. It projects sound holograms, organizing sound vibrations by dimension, movement, and interaction within space. This invites you to reflect on intelligence beyond its human form, questioning how AI perceives and processes your presence. How does its understanding differ from yours?

What Happens When No One Is Watching. - Installation 2

Does the word "quantum" intimidate you? You're not alone. Concepts like entanglement and superposition can seem mysterious, even daunting. Yet, they're at the heart of quantum mechanics—a field that explores the universe's tiniest particles. While classical mechanics explains everyday phenomena, quantum mechanics explores the universe's tiniest particles and their mechanics. We're on the brink of a new era of quantum technologies and understanding quantum mechanics is essential for everyone, not just experts. Imagine a world where quantum computers quickly improve climate models to fight global warming, or where they revolutionize medicine by designing personalized treatments. Quantum technology isn't just the future; it’s the next major societal revolution, and it’s happening now What Happens When No One Is Watching is an ongoing project that delves into the captivating world of quantum physics. In collaboration with QuTech, a leading quantum research institute from TU Delft and TNO, Emergence Delft has developed the Expola—a groundbreaking medium designed to make quantum phenomena more intuitive. Visit De Fabriek to explore the Expola and experience quantum phenomena firsthand.

About Emergence Delft

Emergence Delft is, since September 2023, a Dream Team of TU Delft. The student team joins the forces of TU Delft students with those of the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, Royal Conservatory in The Hague and the Design Academy in Eindhoven. Together they develop new technologies, which they use to build art installations that encourage people to think about the increasingly digital world around us.
