Visual compositions developed from gufa bag
Visual compositions developed from gufa bag
Find Tanger in My Bag explores the gufa, an everyday woven plastic bag in Morocco. Through its colours, patterns and production irregularities, Liping Hua examines the relationship between systems of production and everyday life.

Read the Gufa Like a Newspaper

Find Tanger in My Bag was developed during an artist residency in Tanger, Morocco, supported by the Stimuleringsfonds. The project takes as its starting point the gufa, a woven plastic bag that is ubiquitous in everyday life across Morocco. By examining subtle accidents and irregularities that emerge during its industrial production, Liping translates these traces into compositions, silkscreen prints and installations. In dialogue with the grid—a system that structures both industrial production and modern ways of organizing life—the works reflect on the opportunities, struggles, and vitality that shape Tanger's ongoing transformation within processes of modernisation.

By reconsidering this ordinary object, which reflects local modes of production, the project asks how everyday objects can become witnesses to social transformation, and how moments of imperfection within systems of efficiency open up spaces for imagination, memory, and alternative ways of understanding modernity.
