‘Sleep mode’ is a life sized installation that reflects critically on our relationship with digital technology. A passive infantile creature under the influence of a parasite questions wether we are willing to live in sleep mode.

Algorithms and Illusion

Our reality is turning more and more into a digital dimension of endless entertainment. Addicting algorithms designed to make us dependant on unnatural dopamine cycles. A world of information is available at our fingertips, more than we can ever consume in a lifetime. But it is not free. Tech companies see great value in our attention and data, for it feeds the beast that is advertisement. While distracted and in a vulnerable state of comfort the parasite feeds on us. Under the illusion that we like and deserve this distraction we allow it to feed.

To break the illusion we must be confronted with what this state of being actually looks like. ’Sleep mode’ aims to do this by way of a physical sculpture. Shifting attention from the digital realm, where we are no longer in control, to the here and now. When seen in the physical form of an infant and its parasite, the state of comfort and distraction reveals its true nature.

About Michiel van der Hoeven

I am Michiel, I am a 21 year old artist from Amsterdam and have been drawing my whole life. Since I can remember I have been interested in the bizarre. Inspiration comes to me when cycling through the city or surrounded by nature. The world around me lives its on life in my head and comes out in drawing, painting and sculpture. Themes I like to work with are dreams, philosophy and the relationship between humans and technology. Through new perspectives I urge people to embrace the bizarre.
