NOVER is an innovative biomaterial derived from waste streams in Callan, specifically: wool, wood chips and breadcrumbs. Designed with the intent to reinvigorate Keogh’s Model Bakery in Callan.
The aim of this project is to give new value to Irish waste streams.
Nover is a biomaterial with compressive strength sourced from by-products of sheep farming, waste wood and bakeries in Ireland. It integrates into a circular sustainable economy, creating new possibilities for the bakery and the community. Nover proves that materials like bread crumbs and coarse wool can be used in other forms than just croutons or yarn. The material can promote new revenue streams and celebrates the bakery’s craftsmanship.
The outcomes are a set of display objects, a stool and other vessels. All objects are made from Nover biomaterial apart from the wooden boards which are machined and hand-finished from Irish ash wood offcuts, tinted darker to make breads and cakes stand out.
Nover objects are baked just like cakes into the bakery’s oven when it isn’t used. This ensures that the 6 hours worth of unused heat emitted by the oven is repurposed to the creation of this new material, with properties similar to composite boards but more fibrous and natural.
