Mission Day | Thriving planet

Mission Day | Thriving planet

Tuesday 20 October

How can design strengthen the Earth’s natural resilience and create space for regeneration?

This Mission Day focuses on the transition towards systems, products and materials that deplete less and give more back. Talks, sessions and meet-ups explore topics including circularity, regenerative design, biodiversity and new ways of valuing resources and knowledge.

For who?

The day is relevant to professionals working in the circular economy, energy, agriculture, water and food. Designers, material developers, manufacturing companies, researchers, environmental organisations and policymakers working on climate adaptation, supply chains or waste and resource flows can also share knowledge and forge new connections.

Below you will find the full programme for the Thriving planet Mission Day on Tuesday 20 October. Explore all events, times and locations and create your own itinerary.

Five exhibitions from the DDW26 programme that reflect this Mission Day

Designing our built environment, mobility and materials means shaping how liveable our world is. How can we make better use of the space we already have? What traces do we leave behind as we move? And how can we make the things around us last longer? These five projects at Dutch Design Week (DDW) make such questions tangible.

While the housing shortage continues, buildings remain empty. With An Urban Nomad, Tov Frencken explores how a movable household could bring these spaces back into use. The project can be found at Building TX (A11). At Ketelhuisplein (B5), TAM Industries presents House of Lights, a life-size house printed from recycled plastic.

Design also affects our living environment when we are on the move. At Klokgebouw (B4), TU/ecomotive presents VENTRA: a lightweight electric concept car designed to capture particulate matter from tyres and brakes. This is also where you will find The Pluriversity by Studio Saol, a proposal for higher education rooted in its location and the surrounding community.

And sometimes, a bigger story about systems begins with a sofa. In Unstapled and Refoamed, Annabel Jonkman explores how sofas can be designed so that their upholstery and foam are easier to replace. This makes refurbishment a serious option before a piece of furniture becomes waste. The project can also be found at Klokgebouw (B4).
