Meeknikken of verandering?

In het project van Isabela Verhagen staat de oliepomp centraal. In deze economie zijn we sterk afhankelijk van olie. De winning van olie en de verwerking van olie tot plastic leveren alleen veel ecologische problemen op. Veel producten worden geproduceerd in landen waar arbeid goedkoper is, dit wordt ook wel “displacement” genoemd. Discplacement maakt het mogelijk om de ecologische schade van bepaalde productie processen te verhullen.
De Jaknikker staat symbool voor de fragiele balans tussen de economische voortgang en de ecologische schade van olie. De uit plastic afval
opgebouwde jaknikker neemt de kijker mee in de beweging en laat in een chaotische bedreigende textiele uitwerking zien, hoe de plastic pomp ecologische schade veroorzaakt.

This plastic resembles the cheap materials we are used to that create the chaos that we are blind to. I want to collaborate with a sound designer to accompany the installation with sound. This can be in the form of text or sounds that resemble ‘oil’. Depending on whether the machine is automated, the music will follow along with the movements of the jaknikker.
The pump jack is also a representation of the tipping point we are reaching with global warming, it is about balance and about rethinking how we perceive cheap products like plastic.
