DDW presents: Maarten Baas Makes Time

31 August 2016

To mark DDW’s anniversary year, designer Maarten Baas in cooperation with Dutch Design Week, is organising an interdisciplinary exhibition exploring the theme time. ‘MAARTEN BAAS MAKES TIME’, from 22 until 30 October in the VDMA building in Eindhoven, is a special cooperation between various Dutch designers and top chef Sergio Herman.

Interdisciplinary exhibition exploring time

Time
In the world of design, where trends and developments follow each other in rapid succession, Maarten Baas picks out his own route. Especially for the 15th Dutch Design Week (DDW), in the heart of Eindhoven, the designer curates an exhibition exploring the theme time, in which the boundary between art and design is deliberately blurred. ‘MAARTEN BAAS MAKES TIME’ is a mix of design, visual art, performing arts and gastronomy.

Designer Maarten Baas: ‘Design is an ugly word for a whole collection of beauties. It’s the lubricant between different disciplines and makes it an accessible whole. Everything can come together to detonate a massive creative explosion.’

Universal
In this universal exhibition, kindred spirits and talents from Baas’ own network explore the theme time. The heart of the exhibition is formed by work from Dutch designers like Atelier NL, Jurgen Bey, Joost van Bleiswijk and Kiki van Eijk, realisation in cooperation with theatre maker Joris van Midde (De Kwekerij).

World premiere
Textile manufacturer Vlisco, ceramics producer Cor Unum and VPRO are partners for the exhibition. With photographs and illustrations, Baas provides a taster of his book Hide & Seek that will be published next year (designed by the Anthon Beeke Collectief). He will also be exhibiting his more recent work for the Carpenters Workshop Gallery (world premiere).

World top
In a temporary restaurant, designed entirely by Maarten Baas, Sergio Herman serves up a culinary menu with his signature dishes. The head chef of the Michelin star restaurants PureC in Cadzand and The Jane in Antwerp is among the top of the culinary world. The opening hours for the restaurant will be announced in September. Reservations can be made online soon.

Designer Maarten Baas: ‘I first encountered Sergio Herman when he used my furniture for The Jane. His enormous drive, which is plainly apparent in the VPRO documentary Fucking Perfect, has a catalytic effect on me.’

Additional information
‘MAARTEN BAAS MAKES TIME, from 22 until 30 October during DDW, will take place in the former Van der Meulen Ansems garage (VDMA) on the Vestdijk 25/27 in the heart of Eindhoven. The site is being made available by the Municipality of Eindhoven for this very special initiative.

Alderman for Work, Economy and Vocational Training Staf Depla: ‘This is a good example of the added value of the acquisition team: bringing interesting parties together early on has created a strong event that will draw more people to the city centre.’

Additional information and reservations through the DDW website. The exhibition can only be visited with a DDW ticket (online advance purchase: €17.50, excl. service costs).
