Bringing together original graduation works from 75 years of DAE’s existence, the show highlights not only the excellence and creativity which students and alumni have brought to the field, but also the ways in which design itself has transformed and adapted across the decades.
In 2022, the school celebrates 75 years of training aspiring designers. Today, Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) is one of the world’s leading design schools, recognised internationally for its forward-thinking and renowned professors and alumni, who make their mark on the future by exploring design as an instrument of material, social, environmental and critical innovation.
75 years Design Academy Eindhoven
Design Academy Eindhoven’s previous incarnation – the Academie voor Industriële Vormgeving (AIVE) – was founded in 1947 and was the first school in the Netherlands to aim specifically at providing instruction in industrial design. It played a crucial role in making industrial design part of the Dutch education system, not only introducing a discipline that was unfamiliar at the time, but producing projects and students that helped it win broad acceptance.
Over the years, the curriculum changed to reflect shifts in industry, in the employment needs of companies and in the aspirations of its students. Industrial designers were increasingly expected to be competent in technical, aesthetic, social and cultural aspects of design. Over time, the focus of the educational plan became the needs of the human being, instead of the product, mirroring a change in the approach of many designers. In 1999 the school changed its name to Design Academy Eindhoven.
After 75 years, today, DAE is home to a remarkable community of many nationalities and cultures, as well as many different views of design. They are connected through shared political values and a belief in an inclusive society that embraces diversity in every aspect.
