Interactive data map: Invisible barriers of foreign residents navigating Dutch public systems

This project was part of DDW 2023

Have you ever said to yourself ‘If I could just speak fluent Dutch, all my troubles navigating the Dutch public systems would disappear?’ But is that so, or is language just the most visible barrier?

What lies under the surface?

I left Nanjing, China eight years ago and lived in several Western countries since then. Feeling like I am in a labyrinth every time I navigate public systems in host countries inspired this project.

Dutch Design Week visitors are invited to share their stories of navigating Dutch public systems by interacting with the exhibit, which contributes to the creation of the data map.

The project aims to expose information, challenge presumptions, and spark discussion on invisible barriers, such as cultural differences, legal status, local social networks, local news, and political engagement, at systemic levels.
