Improving women's gynaecological experience

This project was part of DDW 2023

During the Women & Design Talks, Françoise will moderate and guide the conversations and share her perspective on the subjects of ‘Gynecological research’, ‘Trauma sensitive gynecological research’ and ‘Birth better’ based on her expertise in fertility.

Panel 1: Empowered gynecological examinations (Sunday October 22nd, 2023)

Many women experience pain or discomfort during routine gynecological procedures such as the pap smear or IUD placements. Which aspects could be improved and which design solutions can be found to enable women to take charge of their procedures and get to relax a bit more?

-Prof. Dr. Toine Lagro-Janssen - Professor Gender& Women’s Health Radboud UMC
-Monique Wüst - Gynecologist Saxenburg MC
-Zoë Sluisdom - Social Designer 'Afdeling Buitengewone Zaken'
-Puck Wijdeveld - Student at HKU Bachelor Design for Change and Innovation

Panel 2: Trauma-sensitive gynecological examinations (Tuesday October 24th, 2023)

Many women carry trauma in their pelvic region. This can be sexual trauma but also things like having had a negative birthing experience. How can physicians examine them without provoking (further) trauma? Which design solutions exist and how is it possible to navigate the tension that exists between wanting to work in a sensitive manner and keeping professional distance?

-Hanneke Bolt - MD-seksuologist Erasmus MC
-Daphne van der Putten - Director Dana Centrum, Midwife, Founder Integral Pelvic Therapy®
-Nienke Helder - Design professional in sexual and reproductive health
-Lotte Vergouwen - Programme Leader Creative Transformation Platform HKU

Panel 3: Better labour (Thursday October 26th, 2023)

Giving birth is one of the most basal processes on earth. But because neither doctors nor parents want to lose a baby it's also a process that is ruled by procedures and interventions. Bevallen is een van de meest basale processen die er bestaat. Yet knowing when to refrain from intervening, or reflecting on the basis of which (potentially discriminating) parameters you decide to intervene, is just as crucial. How can you 'design' a birthing process where there's space for 'doing nothing'?

-Prof. Dr. Ank de Jonge - Professor Midwifery Science Amsterdam UMC
-Bahar Goodarzi - Postdoctoral Researcher Midwifery Science Amsterdam UMC
-Stefanie Bakker - Illustrator and designer
-Olga van Lingen - Social Designer Buikpraat
