As a means to root and to uproot, Sophia studies pre-Christian symbology in stories and reclaims it in her work. By combining goldsmith techniques with hand carved 3D printed materials and cut 17th century Dutch glass shards, She transforms and redefines their meaning and value in her jewellery.

After studying goldsmithing in Schoonhoven, Sophia Zobel worked in Berlin as a jewellery designer for several years. After having moved back to the Netherlands to study under Iris Nieuwenburg at the Willem de Kooning academy, she started to feel a huge urge for ‘rooting’; to have her feet in this ground again, both in transience as in growth Sophia tries to find the meaning of being radically rooted: what part of rooting is socialisation and what part of rooting can be changed.
