Flow is a digital artwork that interactively recreates the natural flow of water, responding to the spectator's movements and expressions. It encourages the audience to unwind, relax, reflect on their mood, and embrace a deeper awareness of their physical and emotional presence.

An interactive work inspired by nature and mind-body connection

Flow is an interactive, ever-shifting artwork that draws from the rhythms of nature and the connection between the mind and body. Inspired by the natural movement of water, it mirrors the rhythms of water and the fluid dynamics known to have a calming, soothing effect on the human mind. Engaging with these natural rhythms, the work looks to create a unique experience that can reduce stress and promote relaxation and wellbeing.

Meanwhile, by responding to the audience's bodily movements and facial expressions using intriguing flow movements and changes in dynamic color palettes, Flow cultivates a heightened awareness of the mind-body connection. Mind-body exercises, or mindful movement, have been shown to improve emotional regulation, enhance focus, and reduce anxiety. Flow creates an immersive experience that invites participants to engage with any type of bodily movement and be fully present in the current environment, promoting a state of mindfulness where body and mind interact with the fluid dynamics and rhythms of the artwork.

The Immersive Healing Art Project

“Art not only bestows pleasure, it can also heal.”

The Immersive Healing Art project is an evolutionary project on smart, interactive artwork that creates healing environments and experiences for audiences. It revamps our regular surroundings, infusing them with an ambiance that is simultaneously tranquil, rejuvenating, and perpetually captivating.

Through the immersive healing art project, we aim to introduce natural rhythms and dynamics, such as tidal flow and flock movements, into interior environments and reshape them based on environmental data feedback. The project utilizes AI content generation, game engines, and motion sensors to detect anonymous data from the environment, responding with live-generated art with healing power. The visual art is created using custom-built AI algorithms capable of generating an infinite amount of artwork in specific emotional styles, such as calming, sad, happy, and uplifting. Through interaction with body movement and facial expressions, audiences and visitors can immerse themselves in a playful experience and become captivated by the mesmerizing natural movements.

The Progress and Latest Development

Studio Inneract, started the Immersive Healing Art Project in 2019, hoping to create "Designed Artwork" for human wellbeing.

The Immersive Healing Art project, now in its third version, has been launched and trialed in hospitals and workspaces in the UK and China. In early 2020, we collaborated with Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in West London to implement the 1.0 version of the project during the pandemic. In 2022, we upgraded the hospital installation to a more immersive setup and showcased the project at Dutch Design Week 2022. The latest development has been tested in the London hospital within a sleep pod for staff and patients. We’ve received positive feedback and are working to improve this version and trial it in other settings.

Through the immersive healing art project, we aim to harness the healing and restorative power of art and immersive experiences and help different workspaces be transformed into smarter and more caring environments.
