Theme 2024: INVISIBILITIES

“INVISIBILITIES” deals with things that often remain invisible in our society. A well-known example is victim blaming (Victim Blaming). Artists show how greed, ignorance and indifference can lead to inequality and exclusion. The artworks invite you to think about issues such as economic inequality, discrimination and the exclusion of vulnerable groups.
After all, surely it is natural for our elderly to go to the retirement home, and surely countries like Ghana welcome our large quantities of discarded Western textiles? This kind of thinking helps us “solve” problems: out of sight, out of mind.
In addition, homeless people are often moved to remote places and people with mental problems are locked up in institutions. This can be seen as a modern way of “exiling”: we isolate people under the guise of safety and order, but really we just don't want to see them.

And what do we do with ideas we find troublesome: do we banish them too? Technology makes this even easier: we can increasingly live in our own bubble, seeing only what we want to see. With their artworks, interactive installations and immersive experiences, the artists try to make precisely these hidden problems visible.

About Manifestations

Manifestations is the festival of art and technology that celebrates digital activism through fun, wonder and curiosity. A bit rebellious too, with an eye for the uncomfortable and the role of technology in a world that could be better and sweeter.
Thanks to a bold and futuristic focus on the consequences of innovation, the festival is one of the most edgy events during Dutch Design Week, challenging visitors to look more critically at developments. The gaze of artists helps with this. They see new possibilities, new applications, new connections, new scenarios and place unstoppable technological developments in an unexpected perspective.
