Commissioned by the European Committee, design studio Enrichers worked with furniture manufacturer Antares Romania to develop strategies to make their portfolio more circular. How do you design an office chair without glue or staples? And how can the variety of materials be minimized?
Deconstructable and the inflated chair for circular economy
Better Factory is a program commissioned by the European Commission. From the OCCE consortium, Govert Flint from design studio Enrichers is investigating for furniture manufacturer Antares how they can prepare their office furniture for a circular economy. Various strategies have been devised and tested. Existing furniture designs are not particulary designed to be returned, taken apart, repaired and sent back to the customer. This makes it labour-intensive, therefore expensive to refurbish furniture.
NUDE is an office chair that exhibits every material that is used. By strapping the fabric to the seat with a cord, the foam is sandwiched to the seat. It replaces staples and glue. The seat of the chair won't be damaged when the foam or fabric needs to be replaced. And with office chairs, the fabric and the foam are the first elements which wear down.
AIR is a chair that minimized material use in mass. Materials consume energy ranging from heat to electric energy. The less materials we use, the smaller its footprint on energy and it will be easier to flat package the product, reducing transport. Air is also a beautiful material for keeping the body active while sitting.
