California Drought

Dryland California

Drought — © Liselot Cobelens

For the first time, Studio Liselot Cobelens researched an international area and translated it into a landscape tapestry, “California Drought.”

Drought

California is one of the states in the US where climate change is felt most intensely. There are 10 distinct climate zones, nine national parks, 87 state parks and 80,000 agricultural farms. In fact, California agricultural production is in the top ten worldwide!
Dry seasons alternate with extremely wet seasons. Overall, this results in a severe shortage of meltwater, resulting in droughts, devastating fires, loss in biodiversity and unfair distribution of freshwater. Yet it is found difficult to understand the stories of change.
Cobelens went to California to speak to on-the-ground experts from Yosimete park and Berkeley university, among others, who are experiencing and researching this change themselves. She realised during the talks that there are many similarities between the US challenges and the Dutch ones. These are reflected in the carpet
