Housing shortages, an agricultural sector in transition, and the nitrogen problem..All potentially solvable by building differently: with bio-based materials from local supply chains. Discover this in an interactive installation by VPRO Tegenlicht and Medialab and help shape a future-proof landscape
Farmers, Citizens, and Builders
The Dutch government has set a target: by 2030, at least 30% of all new construction materials should be bio-based. VPRO Tegenlicht spotlights the pioneers who lead the way working with natural, locally sourced materials in both farming and construction. This shift in building practices opens up new possibilities for farmers and builders alike, while promoting nature restoration and creating healthier living environments. Does that sound too good to be true? Dozens of entrepreneurs are already demonstrating how they’re making this change a reality.
Building Supply Chains
Bio-based construction is possible—and it's better for the environment—but it hasn’t gained widespread traction yet. The key lies in building efficient supply chains: How can a farmer growing the reed-like bulrush plant ensure that their products are used by builders? How do we encourage city residents to visit a farm instead of a hardware store for their next DIY project? Getting the system in motion requires more than just laws and regulations—it depends on people: people willing to take action. And you, too, can be a part of this chain.
On Air
Step onto the construction site and tune in to Bouwdio AM, a radio platform—connecting online and offline—where DDW’s audience, Tegenlicht’s production team, and farmers and builders collaborate to envision the future of the Netherlands. Don’t miss out on the Meet-Ups hosted in the installation: on Saturday 19 October from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, join designer and DDW beacon Julia Watson to learn how we can use traditional methods to build differently. On Saturday 26 October from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, we’ll get an inside look at the first steps towards an exciting real-life project: the development of a new neighbourhood in the city of Eindhoven.
