You might not know this, but the future of energy has already begun. All over the Netherlands you can find buildings that do not use natural gas. They get their energy in other innovative ways. The proejct ‘Glimpses into Green Energy’ makes these new systems visible for passers-by.
Hidden technologies
The energy transition is in full swing. The Buiksloterham district, in North Amsterdam, is one of the leading neighbourhoods. Almost every energy example is present here. But the installations for generating and storing energy are often hidden, placed on the roof or in the basement, behind locked doors. Just walking by, you can’t see much of it.
Glimpses of Green Energy
Glimpses of Green Energy is opening those doors. Colourful artworks on the street take you behind the scenes. An animation in a viewing tube takes brings you underneath a manhole cover, into a 180-metre-deep well of a thermal storage facility. This well stores sustainable heat for 13 nearby buildings! In one minute, you will learn how a thermal energy storage (TES) system works, and what you can do with it.
The eye-catching red and blue tubes contain animations, illustrations and paintings. They make the transition tangible, and invite visitors to discuss the different energy systems. Local residents from the adjacent neighbourhoods, where people will have to start the energytransition themselves, are also invited to come and take a look.
Now also in Eindhoven
In North Amsterdam, the Glimpses are now installed at eight locations. Together, they form a walk through the neighbourhood, and can be visited until November 2025.
During Dutch Design Week, the Glimpses will be brought to Eindhoven. At the Ketelhuisplein, you will learn all about district heating networks, solar panels, wood construction, TES, solar boilers and combinations of these systems.
Will you come and catch a glimpse too?
