Form and antiform. A sculpture group

Imagine cutting an arm and hand out of a piece of paper, without cutting the shape completely loose. The end of the arm is still attached to the paper. Then fold the arm and hand and put the paper upright, a transformation begins to take place. If you were to fold it again, the cut-out hand could shake hands with its pointed spot, its origin, as it were. However, I won't let it get that far in this series.

For me, this process is not only a way to give shape to matter, but also a way to explore the thin line between being and non-being. The characters that emerge in this way are silent witnesses of the ongoing dialogue between creation and destruction, between form and anti-form.

It is this interaction that creates opposites between what is present and what seems absent that gives my sculptures their unique character and because I obtain the shapes by intuition, each time, each work has its own identity and expression. No two sculptures are the same; Each character requires a different approach and thus gets its own character.

Brought together, the sculptures seem to make contacts and become characters who play a role.

About Tijs Rooijakkers

Tijs Rooijakkers creates large-scale installations and sculptures that explore the boundary between reality and imagination. His work ranges from kinda figurative to abstract, always fluid and organic, with a strong communicative character. Intuitive but conceptually driven, his sculptures evoke a tangible illusion of the malleable and the unreal. Tijs also works on commission and translates his vision into sculptures that perfectly match the needs of the space and his clients.
