Sound-in-Situ explores five design projects and their designers from an often overlooked perspective: their sound qualities. Five unique yet complementary ambient compositions were created and play continuously at Fashion Tech Farm, highlighting the material & content of these projects.
Inspiration & process
We often focus on the visual and tactile qualities of everyday life, even though sound presence & sonic qualities are just as important for shaping an experience. As an experiment, Sound-in-Situ was started to enrich the context of projects shown on Dutch Design Week by giving them a sonic presence.
The concept aims to highlight materials, methods & content from these projects in sound and present them ambiently, rather than adding overly present visual or tactile elements. Through interviews with five designers about their projects, and recordings made from each project, five complementary compositions were created to be played continuously at the projects' locations. Listening closely to these compositions reveals the sound of fabrics & machines, the rhythms of mathematics, Pythagorean chords, and more. Separately, they showcase the project; together, they form one soundscape that keeps changing dynamically.
Come experience Sound-in-Situ at Fashion Tech Farm yourself. This project was made possible by Fashion Tech Farm. The compositions are based on five projects shown at this location: 3D-printed fashion, Design shame, Knit+, Pied-de-Pythagoras, and the Pattern Project.
