Knotto_03: A Playful Fusion of Ceramic Art and Industrial Design

Knotto 03 is a contemporary ceramic light, designed and handcrafted by artist Catalin Filip [Melo Clay] from black vul¬can stoneware clay. Its playful and elongated form alludes to periscopes and nautical structures, and the industrial aesthetic of the piece is further amplified by use of an orange fluorescent PVC cable. The cable acts like a ratchet strap, making the ceramic skin of the piece visibly taut and creased.
The material is pulled, bent and squeezed to express the fluidity of the clay and the shapes resulted are captured and retained in a stone-like finished form, a trait that defines Catalin’s work.
The inside of the tubes are treated with gold leaf, giving the emanating light a golden aura which contrasts with the striking matt ceramic. Each tube has the possibility to orientate in a different direction, allowing the piece to adapt to any space.
Knotto 03 is formed of 4 elements: a base of secured tubes strapped together with a cable and 3 further tubes which are stacked on top of the base.

About Catalin Filip

Catalin Filip makes sculptural ceramic objects inspired by the organic movement and distortions that occur in the physical environment. He works with clay in a intuitive way by pulling and stretching the material with the intention of capturing the resulted shapes in a stone-like finish.
