Futures Garden – Blooming Seeds

Policy creation powered by speculative design, radical empathy, and analytical insight

Futures Garden is a project by the EU Policy Lab of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in collaboration with DG RTD. The EU Policy Lab is the EU’s collaborative and experiential space for innovative policymaking. They host the disciplines foresight, design and behavioral insights.

During this panel talk, we will present and discuss two of our blooming seeds: speculative future artefacts produced by design studios N O R M A L S and Modem.

Modem is an Amsterdam-based office for design & innovation. They are a companion for mindful wandering. Modem operates as the hybrid of a think tank and design studio – from studying the effects of emerging technologies with Harvard GSD to envisioning future scenarios with OpenAI.

N O R M A L S is a Berlin-based design studio supporting organisations in thinking about futures through design and fiction. They specialise in speculative design and work with public clients, research institutes, and companies, providing detailed and imaginative explorations of possible futures, and supporting people in reflecting on and preparing for these scenarios.

Join us in the Futures Garden

We would like to invite you to join the discussion and co-create the future with us. We will watch the speculative artifacts together and then jointly discuss, with a panel, how these futures are perceived. At the end we will shortly explain how these insights are taken up for more future oriented policy-making.
