(Archive) BE O Bottle

Everyday products made from plants for a climate positive future.

This project was part of DDW 2021
The BE O Bottle Jade Green

BE O Lifestyle (Nijmegen) developed the BE O Bottle, a reusable and recyclable water bottle made of bioplastic from a residual flow of sugar cane. From the growing of the sugar cane plant in Brazil to the production and assembly of the cup in the Netherlands, more CO2 is absorbed than emitted.

Plant based plastic

Currently 99% of all plastic is made from petroleum. This causes, among other things, a huge amount of CO2 emissions and natural disasters, and that while there is also another way. By replacing petroleum with renewable sustainable raw materials.

The BE O Bottle is made from a residual flow of sugar cane. This works as follows. During growth, sugar cane converts CO2 into sucrose. The plant is then harvested and ground into cane sugar. During the grinding process, residual flows remain: sugar juice and molasses. After fermentation and distillation, they convert into ethanol. By extracting the moisture from the ethanol, we make ethylene: the basis for the material of the BE O Bottle. The result: a bottle made from a residual flow of sugar cane. This bottle is reusable, dishwasher safe and 100% recyclable.

Climate positive

The BE O Bottle is climate positive! This is because the sugar cane used for the material of the bottle absorbs more CO2 than is emitted during the entire production and transport process. Defects from our LCA research are that 80g of CO2 is removed from the air per bottle.

Made with care

The BE O Bottle was designed in the Netherlands and is also produced here. In addition, the BE O Bottle is lovingly put together in a Dutch a supported employment. A real Dutch Design!
