Talk about inclusion on the #WorkplacePride bench

In the Netherlands, acceptance of LGBTI+ people is declining. Current affairs programme EenVandaag’s recent research shows that it’s true. Last year, 48% of participants considered the Netherlands to be a leading country when it comes to acceptance. Today, just 32% think so.

In other contries, LGBTI+ acceptance is on the rise

It’s not just bad news that respondents don’t consider the Netherlands to be a frontrunner anymore. In more and more countries, LGBTI+ acceptance is on the rise, which further reduces the lead that the Netherlands once had. Six out of ten LGBTI+ people say that expressing their sexual orientation or gender identity is a problem in the Netherlands. And 54% do not feel free to walk hand-in-hand with a partner. Four in ten respondents have had negative experiences because of who they are.

Talk about it on the #WorkplacePride bench

Boomerang designed the #WorkplacePride bench in 2018 for an ABN AMRO video campaign. In the videos, various LGBTI+ employees talk about their experiences with inclusion and acceptance in the workplace. See the kink in the middle of the seat? If you sit on the bench with several people at the same time, the shape of the seat forces you to sit closer together.

At ABN AMRO, acceptance of LGBTI+ people is on the agenda every day. Because everyone at the bank must feel free to be themselves. Safe and without taboos. That’s the highest form of freedom. ABN AMRO strives for a culture – and a society – in which you can freely express your identity or sexual orientation. That's why the bank doesn’t just organise big campaigns during Pride Week. It also has a Pride+ Community and actively discusses the subject throughout the year. That’s how the bank contributes to a more inclusive society, in which it no longer matters who you are or who you like.

How does ABN AMRO score?

ABN AMRO’s latest internal survey, from 2018, shows that the bank is an LGBTI+-friendly organisation. But that’s no reason to sit back and take it easy. Every year, the bank tests its LGBTI+ policy against the Workplace Pride Global Benchmark. Its annual score shows how the bank is developing as a company, and in which specific areas it can improve. Check out the floor sticker to see how ABN AMRO scored on the 2020 Workplace Pride Global Benchmark.
