SEMiLLA Sanitation has developed a concept in which installations convert wastewater locally into clean water and fertilizers for food production. The installations create a closed cycle for the reuse of water and the recovery of water, compost and nutrients.
Heuvelstraat concept
In order to implement closing the water cycle, SEMiLLA Sanitation is realising a project on the Heuvelstraat in Silvolde. Together with Wonion, Nijhuis Saur Industries, the municipality of Oude IJsselstreek, Vitens, the Rijn en IJssel Water Board and the province of Gelderland, they are creating a water-neutral and sewer-free district.
The system focuses on drinking water, gray water and black water. Rainwater is purified into drinking water and gray water is used for toilet flushing. The remaining gray water is purified and for outdoor water use. The concept purifies and processes black water into compost and other nutrients. What remains is water that you can discharge or even convert into reusable water for toilet flushing and washing machine. The yellow stream, the urine, is treated and converted into fertilizer and clean water. Households will save more than 50% of water with the Heuvelstraat concept.
