(Archive) With a wink

Clear white sculptures (with a twist) telling stories about humankind, with all its possibilities and limitations.

This project was part of DDW 2022
Bathtub

In a subtle manner and with humor, the sculptures of Tomas Schats transform situations which, at the first glance, seem impossible and too difficult to change. The narratives he tells are layered and occasionally take unexpected turns to seduce the visitor to (re-)think these (common) situations.

With a wink

Tomas Schats makes clear sculptures from which everything superfluous has been omitted.
The narratives he tells are layered and occasionally take unexpected turns.
Tomas Schats says himself:
'In their minimal linearity, the works resemble cartoons but they are, in their simplicity, more lyrical and more ambiguous, wry, but nevertheless light-footed. They are based on reality, but transcend it
is a subtle manner. They tell stories about humankind, with all its possibilities and limitations.'

'Tomas Schats contests the influence of design upon our environment. Where design attributes its influence as an ‘elegant at best’ carrier of function and morals, Schats applies absurd visual perspectives upon the constitution of this design.'
