Everyone wants to grow old, but nobody wants to be old.

Self-employed people are always (un)consciously busy with their pension. The choices they make now, affect their old-age provision.
At the DDW you can immerse yourself in the dilemmas of a cultural and creative self-employed person and reflect on future visions of their pensions.

Background

In 2020, the Dutch pension system was awarded the best pension system in the world for the third year in a row. However, a development has taken place in the Dutch labor market: the strong growth of the number of self-employed people.

Self-employed have always had their own responsibility for their old-age provision. Especially in the cultural and creative sector, being self-employed is the norm while incomes remain below average. It therefore makes sense that the majority of the self-employed in this sector are not concerned with their retirement or their personal financial future. Having enough income for today is hard enough. But not thinking about the future makes them even more vulnerable.

‘De Kunst Van Later’ (literally translated to ‘The Art of Tomorrow’) is an innovation lab in which we creatively explore in which way the Dutch pensionsystem can become accessible to creative and cultural self-employed.

The project

This project is an ongoing project which consists of 3 phases: explore, envision, enable.

In the first phase, we explored the needs of the self-employed, the Dutch pension system and existing services. Insights have been translated into different visions on the future pension of creative and cultural self-employed.

During the DDW these future visions are shown. Visitors are invited to reflect on them through an interactive installation full of dilemmas that a creative and cultural self-employed encounters.

After the DDW, we will design and experiment in various ways how the pension system can be made more accessible for the creative industry.

This project is made possible by the Innovation Labs program, which gives an impulse to new resilience in the cultural and creative sector. This program is carried out by the Creative Industries Fund NL and CLICKNL on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.
